How to Enable the Cart Drawer in Shopify, Theme by Theme

A cart drawer slides out from the side of the screen when a shopper adds something, instead of sending them to a separate cart page.

It's one setting, not a code change

On all 19 themes covered here this is a single theme setting, usually in the header or cart section of the theme editor. Nothing needs to be coded, and no app is required. Most themes offer three cart behaviours to switch between: a slide-out drawer, a full cart page, and a small popup or notification that confirms the add without taking over the screen.

Why the default matters

The drawer exists to keep shoppers on the collection or product page they were browsing. Sending someone to a dedicated cart page after every add interrupts browsing, and on a large catalog that interruption is expensive. That's why the drawer is the usual recommendation for stores where people buy more than one item per order.

The argument runs the other way for high-consideration single-item purchases. If a shopper is buying one expensive thing, a full cart page gives you room to show shipping, returns and trust information at the moment it matters, and there's no browsing left to interrupt.

What varies between themes

The behaviour is consistent; the extras are not. Some themes let you put a free-shipping progress bar, a discount code field, cart notes, or upsell blocks inside the drawer. Broadcast has the deepest native drawer of the themes here — a dynamic free-shipping message, an in-cart discount field, a separate gift-note block and upsell blocks. On most other themes some of those need a workaround.
