How to Change the Color Scheme in Shopify, Theme by Theme

Changing colors in a current Shopify theme means editing a reusable scheme, not hunting for a color picker inside each individual section.

Schemes, not one-off settings

Every theme covered here uses the same model. You define a small set of color schemes in the theme settings — each one a combination of background, text, button and border colors — and then assign a scheme to each section. Change the scheme once and every section using it updates together.

This is the part that catches people coming from older themes, where each section carried its own colors. If you edit a section expecting to find a background color there, you'll usually find a scheme selector instead.

Where to make the change

Open the theme editor, go to theme settings, and find the colors area. Edit an existing scheme to restyle everything using it, or add a new scheme when you want one section to stand apart — a dark call-to-action band between light sections, for example.

Presets are a shortcut worth knowing

Several of the paid themes ship style presets: complete, pre-built combinations of colors and typography you can apply in one click, then adjust. Prestige ships five. If you're starting from scratch rather than matching an existing brand palette, starting from a preset and editing it is faster than building schemes from nothing.
