How to Enable Product Filtering in Shopify, Theme by Theme

Product filtering on collection pages is enabled in your theme but configured outside it, and knowing which half does what saves a lot of hunting.

The theme only decides whether filters show

Every theme covered here turns filtering on the same way: open the collection template in the theme editor, select the product grid section, and switch on the filtering setting. That toggle controls whether a filter sidebar or drawer appears at all.

What the filters actually are comes from somewhere else. Shopify builds them from your products' options, tags and metafields, and they're managed in the Search & Discovery app — free, and installed by default on every store. If a filter is missing, showing in the wrong order, or listing values you don't want shoppers to see, the fix is in Apps > Search & Discovery > Filters, not in the theme editor.

Sorting usually rides along

Most themes put a sort dropdown next to the filters as a separate switch in the same section, so it's worth turning both on in one pass. Nine of the themes here document the two together; the rest treat sorting as its own setting.

Swatches are the real difference between themes

The genuine variation is presentation. Some themes can render colour and pattern filters as visual swatches instead of a text list, which matters more than it sounds for apparel and homeware — a shopper scanning eight colour names moves slower than one scanning eight colour chips. That's a theme-level capability, so it's worth checking before you commit to a theme for a colour-heavy catalog.
